Chapter 5
In chapter five Gatsby finally meets Daisy for the "first time in five years in November". This statement by Gatsby took Nick and Daisy by surprise because it shows how much Gatsby thinks of Daisy. This scene was very interesting because the usually smooth and eloquent Gatsby is nervous and embarrassed He tells Nick at one point that this was a mistake and Nick has to convince Gatsby to go back over and talk to her. He tells him he is "acting like a little boy". You would think after five years of waiting to finally meet Daisy he would have more to say to her than to sit their bashfully. Eventually they go to Gatsby's house like he had planned and she gets a tour of his house. She is amazed at how nice and rich he is. Gatsby flaunts his wealth as much as possible during the tour at one point showing her all the fancy clothes he owns. Nick felt a little annoyed that Gatsby would not allow him to leave their date and he kept him a long as a third wheel for most of the date. Gatsby and Daisy are both very nervous but excited around each other. They both hide a lot of emotion but you can tell they both like each other a lot. A theme of this scene might be hard work pays off. Gatsby had planned to meet daisy for five years, buying his house and making friends just so that way one day he could convince his neighbor to have Daisy over for tea. I predict that Daisy and Gatsby's relationship continues and grows. They will see a lot more of each other throughout the novel and Daisy may even end up cheating on her already cheating husband Tom or may simply leave him and be with Gatsby.

Chapter 3
In chapter three there is much talk about Gatsby. Many of the characters are gossiping about his past and who he really is. A girl says, "Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once". Another girl named Lucille claims that he was "a German spy during the war". Another girl than chimes in saying, "It couldn't be that because he fought for America during the war. I think Gatsby is a very shady character with a secret he doesn't want anybody to know about. Nick is very curious about Gatsby. After hearing this, He and his friend Jordan walk around the party searching for him but he is nowhere to be found. Most characters have no idea whether or not the rumors are true or not. Since most people at Gatsby's party have never even met Gatsby before nobody has any idea about who he really is. Because of this, rumors spread very fast and almost everybody has heard a story about Gatsby. A theme that may be illustrated by these events are "Never judge a book by its cover". Many people judge Gatsby without ever seeing him or talking to him. They make rash decisions about who he is and what he's done but nobody knows for sure what he has done. I predict that Nick and Gatsby will start spending a lot of time together. While talking Nick will realize the rumors that Gatsby being a spy or a murder are not true. There is something Gatsby is hiding and he will either reveal it to Nick or Nick will realize it on his own.
Chapter 1
I have read chapter one in The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This chapter made me think about how fake Tom is from the east eggs. When Nick first meets Tom he is overlooking the water still wearing his polo clothes. If a regular person were going to have a dinner party they would make sure they are dressed normally. I believe Tom purposely left these polo clothes on to try and show how wealthy he is. He behaves arrogantly and tells people that he has "got a nice place here" and instead of asking Nick if he wants to go inside he just says "We'll go inside". According to Nick he basically is saying that "Don't think my opinion on these matters is final, just because I am stronger and more of a man than you." He makes Nick almost seem annoyed by him and his acting of that he is better than everyone else. He even orders his wife, Daisy, around.
Even though he is being openly rude to her and obviously cheating on her she pretends like she is oblivious. Nick can very easily see through both of their acts as can everyone else. The main theme i have gotten from this chapter is that money isn't everything. Daisy is staying with her arrogant and cheating husband because she is afraid of not having the life of luxury. Even though Fitzgerald never says this directly he makes it very obvious in the way she acts. She is willing to deny the fact that her husband has a secret lover because she wouldn't want to risk the life of non-luxury. She should be more worried about her personal happiness than how expensive her clothes and house are. I predict that there is more to come between Tom and Daisy's relationship. Their relationship seems too unstable and too important to be left alone. Fitzgerald spent a lot of time talking about how arrogant Tom is and how in denial Daisy is to just leave their relationship alone. Nick also seems to calm and normal to just stay the way he is. He never picks a side and always stays non judgmental and just states how things are. Eventually in this novel he is going to have to pick a side.
